A simple kitchen routine for biowaste
In the HSY area, separate food scraps, peelings and coffee grounds from packaging.
Keep a paper bag near where you prepare food. Put scraps, fruit peels and coffee grounds in it. Empty packages go into their own recycling streams according to the material.
Let hot scraps cool before adding them. If the bag gets damp, a paper towel at the bottom can help. Use a paper or compostable bag as HSY advises. Ask the property manager where your building collects biowaste if the bin is unclear.
Avoid common sorting mistakes
HSY accepts coffee filters and kitchen paper but excludes ordinary plastic bags, packaging and large amounts of liquid. Use a paper bag or a compostable bioplastic bag. Outside the HSY area, check your local waste operator’s instructions, as bag and collection guidance can differ.
